Hamilton Tartans
The Hamilton Tartans consist of three broad blue stripes crossing three
broad blue stripes with a narrow white stripe running between each set of
blue stripes. The Hamilton dress tartan displays these stripes on a field
of red, whereas the hunting tartan sets them on a field of green. The inorganic
dyes in the modern tartans are brilliant in color, in contrast to the muted
colors produced by vegetable dyes in earlier times. The corresponding tartans,
often referred to as "modern" and "ancient," are depicted below.
